We can not say the Sebes river is different from any other, but in time castes a valley increasingly more beautiful. Industrial man has widened the river in for places giving place for important and useful artificial lakes, build in 1970 to produce electric energy and the current supply of cities in the area;
The Sebes River is an important tributary of Mures with a total length of 93 km and 1700 m level difference what divides the mountainous peak in two important massifs: Cindrel Mountains and Sebes Mountains. From its stormy character, once, Sebes, received its actual name, that has significance from Hungarian and it means “Fast River”.
Not so long ago the rafting was an important activity for the inhabitants, men from the villages of the valley traded with ,,lake” and raft timber from the mountains towards the processing points of Petresti and Sebes. This activity was an important source of income, although not a very easy one, because you had really need to tame the whirl water and raw force of nature. The rafting came to the end in 1960, after many centuries of consistence, because the Sebes River has become thinner in its body and quieter at anger…
It is said that having faith in the power of the sky get yourself down to earth! In Romania believing in God is, in majority, an indisputable fact established trough Ortodox religion, which has a great influence on the way of living of the Sebes Valley inhabitants, many costumes and traditions explaining trough religious life.
The priest has an important role in the village, that is way, every Sunday at least one member from each family attends the saint church service. Every Sunday people of the village spend a couple hours in places of worship particularly beautiful, architectural and spiritual. And in every home you will fiind a framed icon, physical symbol of Ortodox faith about whom it is said it defends you from many evil!
Agricultural activity, particularly intense on the edge of mountain area, filled also inside it, up to altitudes of 800 – 1000 m, with plants adapted to low temperatures ( potato, corn, some vegetables).
Agriculture is generally “household” type, each settlement with householder people having close to the living place a shed, a stable, coops for sheltering and growing cows, pigs, chikens, cattle and sometimes goats. It is necessarily to exist a vegetable garden (with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, carrots) from where comes out a good soup, an orchard with fruit trees, from where comes the jam, the compote and apples that preserves over the winter, and a vineyard where you fill a glass with wine for guests. From the little household the guest invites draws you with biological and healthy products!
A special place occupies sheep breeders from the area, and the moving of flocks still practice currently. There are two main areas on Sebes Valley, where growing sheep is the basic activity: Loman ( belonging to Saciori) and Sugag with all its villages and hamlets.
In the winter there are raising lambs, spring is the celebration of departure of sheep in the mountains for milking, in the summer it is produced cheese and belows, at the sheepfold below the Peter Peak, in the autumn it came back from fear of wolfs ad bad times. All shepherds life and their families focus cyclically around these life-giving animals!
This is the reason why many ancestors traditions are used normally and everyday life: spinning wool into thread sewing; weaving and crochet; making cheese and belows; manual milking sheep; playing the flute; shepherd’s in the field, as occupation without employment record book; sanctifying of salt for sheep etc.
Being a shepherd is not available to anyone, you have to know some things: to play the flute; to turn the sheep with a call; to feed them in the best glades and meadows; to face the winter, the rain, the wolf, the bear and other dangers; to make good atole; to wear the shepherd cloche; to sit propped in the bat of horn; to know your sheep and their needs; to milk the sheep and give them in the breach and may other things.
Hills climb easly to a mountain ridge hill, sweet without beeing too much spectacular. However it is oferet at every step a wonderful landscape, an opening ,,in all parts”. The valley where the Sebes river goes is hight and steep slope , with forested cliffs and cold springs and cold as ice! The sweet of Sebes Mountains makes it to bear a high degree of human intervention, beeing inhabited up to 1400 m.
The forms of relief are particularly varied: from the high mountains of over 2000 m, high altitude meadows of over 1500 m, platters of erosion with scattered villages, pastures and hayfields, to steep and fearful slopes, carved by Sebes river, till the platou areas of 300 m from the confluence with Mures river, all these located in a rich and wild vegetation.
The forest has always been an opportunity for Romanian to reflect and rest; here he pondered the best his longings and respites and here he has found defense in front of quarrels of all kind what happened so many time to us!
The forest surrounds you here at every step because we are in the most important foresrty of Alba district.Beech, oak, locust and birch at the root of the valley; spruce, fine and fir close to heaven. The wood is present in furniture, means of transport, churches, culverts, beams, fences, sculpture, flutes, spinner forks, forks and rakes for gathering hay, weaving machines, children swings, welcoming gates and warm homes.
One of the oldest artistic pursuits (from neolithic age), more interesting and more known up to abroad is sculpture in wood of funerary posts ( Loman area).
Persists so the habbit to put on the grave of the young and unmarried a wodden post, straight, having the height of the deceased, with a tickness of 15/15 cm, beautiful ornate with notches and cuts, having in the top, a bird with open wing ready to fly.
From the hystorical point of view, on Sebes Valley time has not passed in vain, as testimony sit the ruins of Petresti (1438) and Sasciori (1309) fortresses, the ruins of Capalna dacian fortresses (century I B.CHR.), traditional ctrafsmen in ceramics (Petresti), painters of churches and icons on glass(Laz), collectors og folk art(Loman). At the foot of the Valley it chest weather the Sebes city, with the history museum established in 1951, the fortified enclosure around the old city, with Saxon architectural style, with Francescan and Evangelical churches and many others.
People are hospitable and curious despite the vary large doors and hiding of the household! Near the houses you can often see banks just fiting there to soak up the storys about what it going on trough the village and neighbourhood. Unfortunately we are witness to a depopulation of mounatain area, understandable in the same time: the life of mountain people was forced to take place in the middle of the mountains with all the shortcomins here; the mountain has defended them from many troubles the last we knew and named comunism.
The life increasingly more urban, confortably and seen on TV, attract young aspirant for better…and tratition dispels through discos, the elders pray at icons in summer kitchens, pasteurizes milk flows aut of plastic bags, that is not a big problem as long as our kids get to see increasingly more foregn countries; and it is not a problem especially when we see that they return home missing polenta with cheese made in mountain!
Administrative, we can easily notice, beside Sebes city , the two municipalities in the Sebes Valley: Sasciori and Sugag village; not only they are different but even the villages they meet have their own identity. Sebes is the place where everybody got o market, to sell or especially to buy something. People here are modern and more cultivated, as a result there are bars, restaurants and schools by which each loses or wins time after abilities and possibilities;
Petreşti, glorious and great settlement, old Saxon, solve its problems necessarily at city hall in Sebes; the man here is skillful here in many industries ( paper, furniture, construction of houses, interior and exterior design etc.)
Sebeşelul, is a tight town if you pass by car and full of breath if you walk.
Săscioriul is proud of being the center of village, as a result carries out crowd of animals and booths in a country fair.
Lomanul sit perched on the mountains and it is hard to convince people here to descend towards the Valley: well they have their affairs! A village particularly preserving traditions and customs.
Laz, small framed and fixed in the open Valley, sit down gentle and cut the vine in the Muncel.
Capâlna spreads on all the edges of the Valley up the Cornet Hill, where the Dacian’s passed on.
Şugăjenii people are great! Alike the Sibiu edge area, and build great big houses. But here you see traditional weddings and people coming to the Church in folk costumes.
Road infrastructure we can describe it as being under construction like so many things in our country! Your car will experience a good road along the Valley up to the output of Sugag, than you will find that bracket with “here are your money” forgot to be written… However, there are administrative County promises to repair the road so you will be able to climb the mountain soon without investing in a 4×4 car; otherwise a solution would be to climb on to Loman, atop the hill where there is a country road, unpaved but without the thread of many pits!
We guarantee that there is electricity in all the villages of the Valley and for some mountain settlements have already mounted wind and solar alternative installations. Running water is a job handled mush earlier for the villages of the Valley, for the bottom of the hill still represent a problem1 It is not such a big deal, a basin or a barrel solve the problem in a rustic and efficient way!
Concerning the phone, if is not a land line phone there is necessarily a cell phone. And it is a bad cell phone because not few times you come across a shepherd with a cell phone to his belt or over a mobile phone relay. Human and veterinary dispensaries and also pharmacies, where you can find everything you need, are found in every village residence.
The hikings are useful for constant physical exercise, for breathing fresh air at village and hight, for the views of the peak and for the people and places you encounter in the way; We have listed various thematically targets worth visiting in 9 tours, which can be taken individually and unorganized or you can call on the services of the tourist guide from the Association. The Surianu Mountains are covered by paths and forest roads maked and unmarked, so that you cand choose different types of hikings.
The effort of circulate it trough is compensatory by the satisfaction of discovering an invaluable natural treasures, archaeological etnographic and folkclore( The collection of Our Mountains, Surianu, 1986.
To ride the bike on the mountain it is not obvious to anyoune; on Sebes Valley there is a path set by “Clubul de Cicloturism”, Cluj Napoca. However it is desirable to come equipped for the sport with those needed, including bycicles. (map)
The horse, beautiful and superior to the human through its appearance, has always been prefered at the pricely courts, for utility transport and for different sports. Today Sebes Valley people still use it, as an alternative to ox, donkey and track as a result you will see often on the hills, cornfields colored in many ways. If you want to ride a horse, safely, but at an additional cost, we advise you to got to Rahau where there is a riding school. (details)
The donkey remains uncrowned king of small an functional animals that mountain people, shepherds, used it to carry various weights. In vein we used past tense, because donkeys remain the same useful to carry and cute animal. You can therefore take advantage of a real country ride, on the back of this universal animal, as an alternnative to walking, hiking or riding a bike.
Golf…we can not say about this sport that was born or raised here, nor became traditional from some old times. It is obvious borrowed from the English in Tomita family, and with great pleasure and good will it came down to you with passion, if you ar interested in. Worth it!
If you do not take part in the national football team or of the division A, you can play football on the three football fields in the region: Sebes, Sasciori or Sugag. It is obvious that the hard games do not play here but you can dare to stand up against local teams, whoever you are!
For well behaved children there is a little park in Laz village, where parents can get rid of their mouth for a few moments, measurable in terms of their reasonableness!
About fishing we can say that at the edge of reservoir dams, build on the Sebes River you can see the threads more or less stretched out of some indigenous trout, grayling or barbell.
However, you can receive other information from the guild.
If you fancy rowing, we inform you with dismay that large and wide dams on Sebes River are not yet equipped for this. But for a romantic walk or for other issues we recommend that you rent a boat on the Lake from Sebes Town.
If you are young and restless , at the same time, go to disco from Sasciori, about witch is said to be the coolest in the area. Modern music and vivid teenagers.
Nature, however, should not be underestimated under any circumstance, because there are willd and unhindered animals and free from the danger of extinction ( hopefully for a long time). Tus for a start we have to notice without altering in any way the wildness, the following animals: Wolf, a carnivore and a lot less offensive nowadays; bear from coniferous forests; lynx, the most serious animal; Fox, that is still arch, weasel, which suck the milk of dairy cows; Hedgehog, the cute clew of needles; mole, that make the place under ground up comes aut; wild boar, wild pig that damage the hay fields; the squirrel, joyful and full of life; Deer, most proud animal met in the mountain area, the king of the forest; mice, snails, frogs and butterflies, beetles of all sorts and flying creatures!
If you still go through the forest, you’ll get a glimpse here: edible mushrooms (boletus edulis), (polyporu confluiens), Tinder beech and oak (fomes igniarius), chestnut sponge (agaricius pipartus).
Romanian folklore is diverse and abundant, wherever you are in this country. So that neither the Sebeş Valley has suffered from lack of inspiration in traditional events!
People have started wearing folk costumes specific of the region (only in black and white), you rarely see it anymore worn by village elders on Sunday at Church. The elder dressed so proud, they started to play “haţegana” and “jiana” especially “învârtita”! And some of them have been found to know to sing the flute and made a flute band.
In general, there are always reasons to meet with each other; in the old days, in the villages of Sebes River were wonderful handicraft evening sitting and often, especially in the winter months, the world congregate at the moonshine: < < young men and girls came to the moon (when the moon came out) with the fork, men playng the flutes and girls spinning. > > Maria Popiuc, i986. Today ,,sezatoarea” has disappeared as a common manifestation, and it happens in exceptional cases and issues of tourism interest. Another meeting place were ,,nedeile”, which are true economic trade fairs: for example, on this occasion was taking place < < branching the cheese > >.
The language spoken here is very similar to Romanian literary language; of course, there are idioms and expressions for the man in the other places, as for example: ,,something is not in order, it’s serious!”
